Terminal 1 Building

5 airlines 23 restaurants 13 lounges 22 shops

Terminal T1 hosts 5 airlines. It's Peach Aviation's home turf at KIX. You'll find 23 dining options, 13 lounges, 22 shops here.

Most full-service flights at KIX still run through long, skinny T1

Terminal 1 at Kansai International (T1) sits on the main artificial island and handles full-service carriers like All Nippon Airways, Japan Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Delta, and Korean Air. The building stretches in a straight line with domestic areas on levels 2 and 3 and international departures mainly funneled to the 4F side. If you flew in on a low-cost carrier to T2, you are in the wrong building for these airlines and will need to transfer terminals by shuttle bus.

Four floors: eat on 2F/3F, fly from 4F

Most useful food in T1 clusters on 2F domestic departures and 3F shopping/dining, while 4F international departures has only scattered cafes by the gates. InsideKyoto calls T1 the heart of KIX because almost all shops and services sit in this structure, not over at T2. Plan about 10–15 minutes to move between floors via escalators or elevators, especially if you are aiming for 3F restaurants then heading up to a 4F security checkpoint.

Eating strategy: proper meal before security, snack after

Regulars grab real meals landside, then head airside closer to boarding because post-security options are thin. On 2F and 3F you’ll see local names like 551 Horai for pork buns, Tonkatsu KYK for cutlets, and Ebiichi for seafood, plus chains like Matsuya and Yottekoya for rice bowls and ramen. Expect quick-service prices in the ¥700–¥1,500 range, with sit-down sets edging higher around ¥1,500–¥2,000.

Fast food and coffee runs

For a 10-minute grab-and-go, T1 has Mos Burger, McDonald’s, and Subway sprinkled through the public levels, plus both Starbucks Coffee and Tully’s Coffee. A basic latte at Starbucks on 3F usually runs around ¥450–¥550, similar to city pricing. These outlets stay open for early morning and late-night banks, but if your flight departs after 22:00, double-check hours on-site since some close by 21:00.

Aeroplaza option under Hotel Nikko

If 3F feels jammed, cross the short walkway over the tracks to the Aeroplaza under Hotel Nikko Kansai Airport, roughly a 5-minute walk from the T1 ticket gates. InsideKyoto notes additional restaurants tucked beneath the hotel, and they tend to be calmer than the main terminal halls during evening peaks. Build at least a 20–25 minute buffer to eat there and get back through 4F security before boarding.

Lounges: United often ranks higher than ANA and JAL

On the international side of T1, oneworld flyers typically use the JAL Sakura Lounge, while Star Alliance elites choose between the ANA lounge and the United Club, all in the 4F area. FlyerTalk users say the ANA lounge is “ok” but give the United lounge the edge for a wider range of food and drinks and better odds of finding a seat. None of the T1 lounges draw rave reviews, so set expectations closer to basic relaxation than destination lounge.

Asuka Lounge by Gates 11–12 as a backup

Qatar and some other carriers sometimes hand out invitations to Asuka Lounge, located between Gates 11 and 12 on the international concourse. One FlyerTalk poster specifically mentioned being routed there instead of Sakura Lounge on a Qatar itinerary. Because Asuka Lounge sits slightly off the main passenger flow, you stand a better chance of finding a chair when the bigger lounges near central security fill up.

Pay-in and card lounges scattered through T1

Pay-in spaces include KIX Lounge Premium and KIX Lounge Kansai, along with KIX Airport Café Lounge NODOKA and the Membership SOUTH LOUNGE, mainly on the landside upper floors near shops. International departures also has an International Departure Lounge and a Card Member Lounge in the 4F zone for certain credit card holders. Expect basic snacks and soft drinks rather than full buffets, closer to the “limited amenities” domestic lounge reports on FlyerTalk.

Shopping: from MUJI to UNIQLO to duty free

T1 carries most of KIX’s retail, including MUJI to GO, a UNIQLO branch, ABC-MART for shoes, and Japan Tech and BIC Camera for cables and travel electronics. Kawaii Buzz and TASTE OF JAPAN KANSAI TABINIKKI specialize in region-branded souvenirs, while KIX DUTY FREE shops line the 4F international departures route. Lawson’s 4F store is the quick stop for onigiri and drinks under ¥300 before you head airside.

Books, gadgets, and last-minute snacks

Tsutaya in T1 stocks Japanese magazines, books, and some English titles, useful if you forgot a paperback for a 10–12 hour long-haul. There is also an Akihabara-style electronics shop and a gowell select outlet for travel goods and small gadgets. If you are short on time, Lawson or another konbini gives you a full set of drinks, snacks, and even simple bentos in under five minutes.

Watch out for weak airside options

FlyerTalk regulars repeatedly call T1’s post-security mix “extremely weak” for lounges, duty free, and food compared with other Japanese hubs like HND or NRT. Duty free is fine for liquor and cosmetics, but hot food near some gates shrinks to just a couple of small cafes. Eat on 2F/3F or at Aeroplaza, then clear security about 45–60 minutes before boarding instead of hunting for real meals airside.

One practical tip

If you land in T1, need food, and your next flight leaves from a 4F international gate like 31 or 35, go straight to 3F first, eat at 551 Horai or Tonkatsu KYK, then head up; that up-then-up move usually saves 10 minutes of wandering versus drifting along the gate corridors hungry.

Insider tips for Terminal T1

Insider

If arriving in T1 with several hours before a flight, the 3F restaurant floor landside offers more diverse and affordable dining than staying airside.

Avoid

T2 offers limited food and seating options; rely on T1 or Aeroplaza for more substantial meals, especially during off-peak hours.

Local

The on-site Hotel Nikko Kansai Airport provides breakfast and day-use packages, noted for being a better value than some T1 dining options during peak times.
