Two hours from SKP to Ohrid is easiest by rental car
Car rental desks sit in the arrivals hall of Terminal T at Skopje International Airport, right after customs. Most counters keep hours aligned with major arrivals, roughly 06:00–23:00, but late-night flights can find only 1–2 operators still open. You book at the desk, then pick up the car in the marked rental lot about a 3–5 minute walk from the terminal doors.
Daily rates often start around €25–€30 for a small manual, but automatic cars in North Macedonia regularly run closer to €35–€45 per day. For a group of four adults splitting the bill, that can work out cheaper than separate bus tickets to Ohrid, which sits about 170 km from SKP. Most agencies at SKP include basic insurance and a limited or unlimited kilometer allowance; always check the daily kilometer cap if you plan to circle Ohrid Lake or head toward Bitola.
Driving time from SKP to Skopje city center is usually 25–30 minutes for the 23–25 km trip along the A4 and local roads. The airport access road connects directly to the A4/E-75 corridor, which is the same motorway you use for Veles and then the Ohrid route. Matka Canyon is around 40–45 minutes from SKP by car, depending on Skopje traffic and the last stretch of narrower local roads.
Fuel prices in North Macedonia often sit around €1.40–€1.60 per liter, so add that to your budgeting for a 340 km round-trip SKP–Ohrid–SKP drive. Cross-border trips to Albania, Greece, or Kosovo almost always require written permission from the rental company plus an extra insurance fee, sometimes €30–€50 per border authorization. If you plan a day run to Tirana, confirm the green card and cross-border rules at the desk before signing.
Parking at SKP’s main lot, right in front of Terminal T, is paid by the hour; day rates are posted at the entrance barrier and usually under €10 for 24 hours. Skopje city center uses a zoned street parking system with posted hourly rates, so it can be easier to target a specific paid garage. For Matka Canyon, the final parking area often fills by late morning on weekends, so aim to leave the airport by 08:00 if you want a spot without circling.
One tip: book online with a SKP pickup at least 48 hours ahead, then bring a printed reservation that shows mileage, insurance, and cross-border rules, so you can push back if the counter terms suddenly shift.
