Express Drop Off

Short-stay drop-off

Two-minute kerbside stop right outside Melbourne Airport terminals

Express Drop Off sits on the departures roadway in front of Melbourne Airport’s T1, T2 and T3, marked as the short-stay drop-off zone. It’s built for quick goodbyes, not parking for a coffee or a walk inside the terminal. Pull in, unload bags, and move on; that’s the whole brief here.

This zone is signed as “Express Drop Off” on the approach roads to T1, T2 and T3, so watch the overhead boards as you come off the Tullamarine Freeway (M2). You’re on the same upper-level departures loop used by Qantas at T1, international carriers at T2, and Virgin Australia at T3, so lanes can feel tight when traffic banks up.

Express Drop Off is metered by time, with strict limits aimed at sub-10-minute stops rather than hour-long waits. You stay in the driver’s seat, the passenger jumps out with bags, and you roll again; this is not the place to leave the car and walk into T2 duty free or the T3 food court. If you want longer than a quick handoff, move to one of the terminal car parks instead.

The zone is directly kerbside, so your passenger steps out onto the footpath that runs straight into T1, T2 or T3 check-in areas in under 200 metres. That’s handy for heavy luggage or kids who don’t want to cross roads or ramps. There’s no covered waiting area for drivers, and no toilets at the kerb; those are inside the terminals literally a minute’s walk away.

Tip: have bags out of the boot and goodbyes done before you hit the Express Drop Off signs outside T1–T3, so you’re gone again within a couple of minutes and not holding up the lane.
