No Air India lounge actually operating in MAA T2
On paper this is the Air India Maharaja Lounge in Terminal 2, but frequent flyers in 2024 report that the physical lounge in the older terminal is shut and not usable. One FlyerTalk regular flatly states “the Maharaja lounge that was situated in the older terminal cannot be used right now,” so you won’t find a staffed desk or working entrance in the current T2 domestic area.
The access rules still say Air India business class and status passengers in T2 get lounge benefits, but in practice agents hand out meal vouchers. In the LX First ex‑MAA discussion, a member notes that Air India’s own page lists Copper Chimney as the alternative, meaning you get restaurant seating instead of a dedicated lounge. Reports describe this as the only Air India domestic “lounge” option at MAA for now.
Instead of Wi‑Fi codes and shower keys, you’re dealing with a food credit. Vouchers are typically valid at Copper Chimney inside Terminal 2, airside, after security, during the restaurant’s operating hours aligned with peak bank departures. Exact voucher value isn’t consistently reported, but comments suggest it covers a basic meal and soft drink rather than a full multi‑course spread or alcohol.
Expectation setting helps here. You won’t get quiet nap chairs, printers, or boarding announcements like in a standard business lounge. You will get a sit‑down restaurant table, a printed bill at Copper Chimney, and a deduction up to the voucher limit. One FlyerTalk poster who initially assumed “Air India Maharaja business class lounge” later clarified that “AI doesn’t have their own lounge in MAA, they send you to the Copper Chimney Restaurant,” which sums up the current setup.
Watch out for the disappointment factor. Several passengers in the LX First thread call out the lack of any real Air India lounge at Chennai as a let‑down for premium cabin and elite tickets that can easily run above ₹50,000 one‑way on some routes. If you’re used to Star Alliance hubs with multiple branded lounges, MAA T2 will feel bare‑bones.
Practical tip: eat at Copper Chimney closer to your actual boarding time, because once you’ve used the Air India voucher in T2 there’s nowhere lounge‑like to sit quietly near the gates for another 60–90 minutes.
