Intercity bus

Three hours to Dali or six to Lijiang from KMG T1

The long-distance coach option at Kunming Changshui (T1) is aimed at overland travelers heading to places like Dali (about 3–5 hours by coach from Kunming city stations) or Lijiang (about 6–8 hours). You don’t board these big intercity buses right at the terminal door; most flyers land at KMG, ride into Kunming by airport shuttle or metro, then connect to main coach stations such as West or North Bus Station for onward Yunnan routes.

Airport shuttles from KMG into the city run roughly every 20–30 minutes and cost in the 20–25 RMB range, which is the first leg of your bus combo. From there, long-distance tickets to Dali or Lijiang usually run 130–220 RMB depending on class and operator, with multiple departures during the day but fewer at night. Signage at Kunming coach stations is mostly in Chinese, so having your destination written in characters like “大理” or “丽江” helps a lot.

Trip reports on Flyertalk and TripAdvisor mention travelers pairing a morning arrival into Kunming with an afternoon or evening coach to places like Lijiang, Shangri-La, or Lugu Lake. The recurring complaint: misaligned schedules. Flights landing after 18:00 often miss the last buses out, which can leave you stuck in Kunming for the night when the final coach to Dali or Lijiang may depart around 19:00–21:00.

Regulars who loop Yunnan by bus usually plan 1 buffer night in Kunming before tackling a 6–8 hour coach ride. They’ll book a cheap hotel near one of the city’s long-distance stations, buy tickets in person a few hours in advance, and then take an early bus the next morning. This approach saves you from trying to gamble on a 60–90 minute window between your plane touching down at T1 and a once-a-day coach rolling out.

Watch out for winter and Golden Week (around 1–7 October) when bus tickets toward Lijiang and Dali can sell out a day ahead. Several forum posts describe travelers landing at KMG at 15:00, only to find the next available seat to Lijiang not until the following morning. In those cases, the only realistic options are a hotel in town or switching to a late-evening train if seats exist.

One practical tip: lock in your rough plan before you fly by checking same-day coach times on Chinese apps like Ctrip (Trip.com) or Qunar, then build at least 3 hours between your scheduled landing at KMG and any long-distance coach departure from Kunming city.
