Car rental

Most major brands sit in the Rental Car Center by Terminal 1

The dedicated Rental Car Center at King Abdulaziz International Airport connects directly to Terminal 1, so you stay within the airport footprint from flight to keys-in-hand. Counters typically align with international names plus local agencies, giving you options if one line looks long. Expect desks to track main bank flight times, with the busiest stretch often in the evening arrival waves.

Location is landside near arrivals in Terminal 1, so you collect your luggage first, then follow signs for "Car Rental" toward the public concourse. If you land at Terminal 1, walking time is usually under 10 minutes from the baggage belt to the counters. From the Hajj Terminal, budget extra time and confirm in advance that your rental company serves that terminal or runs a shuttle.

Most agencies at JED rent by the 24-hour block, so a pickup at 22:00 and return next day at 23:00 still counts as two days. Check for mileage caps in kilometers, not miles, since longer drives to Jeddah Corniche (about 25–30 minutes) or Makkah (around 70–80 km) can add up. Ask at the desk about cross-city drop fees before you sign; one-way charges inside Saudi Arabia can rival a full extra day of rental.

Fuel policy matters here: some contracts demand you return the car full, others pre-charge a tank at a set SAR rate. The nearest on-airport or airport-adjacent fuel options sit within a roughly 5–10 km radius of Terminal 1, so plan a quick stop on the way back. Photograph the fuel gauge and odometer at pickup and drop-off, with a timestamp, to avoid disputes.

Inspections usually happen twice: first at the counter or parking bay, then again at return, both within the Rental Car Center compound. Walk the car with your phone camera for at least 1–2 minutes of continuous video, capturing existing scuffs, windshield chips, and tire condition. In summer, cabin temperatures can hit 40°C plus, so confirm that the A/C blows cold before you leave the parking ramp.

For timing, build a 30–45 minute buffer on arrival to clear immigration, collect bags, and complete paperwork at the Rental Car Center, and another 30–45 minutes on departure day to refuel, return the car, and walk back to check-in. One practical move: save your agency’s exact pin location in your maps app when you depart, so finding the return lane at Terminal 1 on the way back takes seconds instead of extra loops around the access roads.
