Group transport

Most Hajj coaches line up outside JED’s dedicated Hajj Terminal

Charter Hajj Coaches run as pre-booked group transport between King Abdulaziz International Airport and large pilgrim accommodations in Makkah and Madinah, usually tied to an official Hajj package. Coaches normally stage at the Hajj Terminal at JED, not Terminal 1, so check your ticket to confirm which terminal your airline uses before landing. If your flight is assigned to Terminal 1 but your group coach departs from the Hajj Terminal, account for extra time to transfer between the two areas by airport shuttle or organizer transport.

Most packages use 40–50 seat air-conditioned buses, and groups are loaded in batches based on flight numbers and arrival times. Ground staff often match passengers to buses using group IDs printed on the Hajj visa or package documents, so keep a hard copy of your package confirmation and passport ready in the staging area. Coaches generally do not depart on a fixed public timetable like city buses; they leave when a full flight group clears immigration, customs, and health checks in the Hajj Terminal.

Travel time from JED to central Makkah by charter coach usually runs 60–90 minutes depending on traffic on Highway 15, and longer on peak Hajj days. The same style of charter buses to Madinah can take 4–6 hours via Route 15/Route 60, so build in snacks and water before boarding since not every operator announces rest breaks. Drivers typically load checked bags into under-floor luggage bays, and passengers keep small hand luggage in the cabin, so tag each checked bag with your group name and hotel name in Makkah or Madinah.

Most charter Hajj coaches are paid as part of an all-inclusive package, so you normally do not hand the driver cash at JED. Some organizers still ask for small tips of around 5–10 SAR per piece of large luggage at loading, so keep a few 5 SAR notes handy if you want to participate. There is usually at least one group coordinator or mutawwif on board who tracks passenger counts against a manifest, and that person is your main contact if bags are missing or you are separated from your assigned bus at the Hajj Terminal.

One practical tip: as soon as you clear customs in the Hajj Terminal, head directly to the sign or desk showing your tour company name and Hajj group number, then confirm the coach bay number before you sit down; buses can be reassigned within 10–15 minutes if a group gathers faster than expected.
