Trains reach Makkah in about 30–40 minutes from JED

The Haramain High Speed Railway runs from King Abdulaziz International Airport’s Terminal 1 station to Makkah and Madinah, with stops at Jeddah Al-Sulaymaniyah and King Abdullah Economic City. Trains run at up to 300 km/h and cut the airport–Makkah trip to around 30–40 minutes, compared with 60–90 minutes by car in traffic.

The airport station connects directly to Terminal 1 (not the Hajj terminal) via a pedestrian bridge, so you stay air‑conditioned from check‑in to the platform. Trains usually operate from early morning to late evening, but schedules vary by day and season, so check the official timetable for exact first/last departures before you book a tight arrival or departure.

Standard class tickets on the Haramain line often price in the SAR 50–80 range for JED–Makkah and SAR 100–180 for JED–Madinah, depending on time of day and how early you book. You can buy tickets online in advance or at the station counters and machines next to the platforms; keep your passport and PNR handy because staff sometimes check flight details for same‑day connections.

The station sits landside, so you must clear immigration and customs before you can board, which can easily take 45–90 minutes in peak Umrah or Hajj periods. Build the buffer: aim for a train at least 2 hours after scheduled arrival on international flights, and at least 3 hours before departure if you are coming in from Makkah or Madinah by train.

On board, Standard and Business cars both have air‑conditioning and assigned seats; Business gets a 2–1 layout and slightly wider seats, while Standard uses a 2–2 layout. Food trolleys sell snacks and drinks for around SAR 5–20 per item, and most trains offer charging sockets at each pair of seats, useful if your phone is dying after an overnight flight to JED.

For arrivals into the Hajj terminal, there is currently no direct station link, so you first transfer by bus or taxi to Terminal 1, which can add 20–40 minutes. If your flight can change between Hajj and Terminal 1 in busy seasons, double‑check the printed terminal on your ticket before pre‑booking a non‑refundable Haramain departure.

One practical tip: for big groups heading to Makkah, compare the total train fare with a single large taxi or pre‑booked van; once you pass 4–5 people, a shared car from JED can sometimes beat the SAR total for multiple Haramain tickets.
