Skip the taxi queue and book Kakao T at Gimpo
A Kakao T rideshare from Gimpo International Airport (GMP) gets you curb-to-door in about 30–60 minutes to central Seoul, depending on traffic, with no taxi-rank line. You request cars through the Kakao T app, which now has an English interface and uses your phone’s GPS plus the airport address you enter. Fares into areas like Hongdae or Mapo usually land in the ₩20,000–₩35,000 range, and you see the estimate before you confirm.
Both International and Domestic terminals at GMP support rideshare pickup at the public curb outside arrivals. After exiting baggage claim on Level 1, follow signs to the regular taxi and passenger pickup area; drivers use the same curb lanes, not a special rideshare deck. The app shows your car’s plate number in Korean characters and numbers, so screenshot the plate and match it at the curb before getting in.
Kakao T works 24/7, though wait times spike around the 08:00–10:00 and 18:00–21:00 rush windows when regular taxis also get scarce. You can pay by foreign credit card saved in the app, or by Korean cards and some debit cards; cash payment is not always available, so add at least one valid card before landing. Surge pricing can push a GMP–Gangnam ride over ₩40,000 during heavy rain or Friday evening peaks.
Here’s the basic flow at Gimpo in five steps:
- 1. Before you fly, download Kakao T and switch the app language to English in Settings; add a card and verify it with a small test charge.
- 2. After landing at the International or Domestic terminal, clear immigration (if applicable), collect bags, and walk out to Level 1 public arrivals.
- 3. Stand near Exit 3–5 at International or the main arrivals doors at Domestic, then open Kakao T and set your pickup point to “Gimpo International Airport” or “Gimpo Domestic Terminal.”
- 4. Enter your hotel or exact street address in Seoul; check the fare estimate and vehicle type (standard taxi vs black/private) and tap request.
- 5. When the app shows the car is 1–3 minutes away, move to the exact curb lane pin, confirm the license plate, and only then get in and confirm the destination with the driver.
One practical tip: mobile data at the curb is crucial, so either pick up an eSIM or physical SIM in the terminal (several shops near arrivals operate from around 07:00 to 22:00) or pre-activate roaming before your flight; Kakao T requests can fail if your signal drops just as the driver is assigned.
