Dubai Metro Red Line

Tickets on the Red Line cost far less than taxis in Dubai.

Dubai Metro Red Line runs from DXB Terminals 1 and 3 into the city in about 20–30 minutes, with trains every 7–10 minutes during the day. Stations are inside T1 and T3, directly linked to the arrivals halls, so you stay indoors the whole way. T2 does not have a metro station; you’ll need a shuttle or taxi to reach T1/T3 first.

You’ll need an NOL card to ride; the basic red paper ticket works for short stays and can be bought at the ticket office or machines near the T1 and T3 platforms. Fares start around a few dirhams for one zone, and even a multi-zone ride typically stays under 10–15 AED. Keep the card handy because you have to tap in and tap out at both DXB and your destination station.

Trains usually run from around 5:00 to midnight on weekdays and a bit later on weekends, but times shift slightly by day, so check the RTA schedule if you land after 23:00. During peak hours, roughly 7:00–9:00 and 17:00–19:00, T1 and T3 platforms can fill up quickly. If you land around those times, add 10 extra minutes for queues at the ticket machines.

Luggage is the main trade-off: there is a small luggage area per carriage and limited floor space, so two large 32 kg suitcases at T3 can turn the ride into a squeeze. If you just have a carry-on and a backpack, walking from arrivals to the Red Line platform in T1 or T3 takes about 5–10 minutes via signed corridors. For anything oversized or more than one big checked bag per person, a taxi from outside each terminal usually makes more sense.

For the city end, BurJuman, Union, and Business Bay are common interchange stops, each about 20–30 minutes from DXB on the Red Line. Many hotels around Dubai Mall, DIFC, and Dubai Marina sit within 500–800 meters of stations like Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall or DMCC. One practical tip: load extra credit onto your NOL card at DXB so you don’t have to queue again at city stations during evening rush.
