South Delhi and Noida regulars ride the Magenta Line to DEL
The Magenta Line of the Delhi Metro connects Terminal 1 (T1) at Indira Gandhi International Airport with western and southern parts of the city, including Hauz Khas, Kalkaji Mandir, Nehru Place and Botanical Garden in Noida. Trains typically run every 5–7 minutes in peak hours and around every 8–10 minutes late evenings, so you rarely wait long on the platform.
From T1, the nearest station is Terminal 1–IGI Airport on the Magenta Line, opened in 2018, and linked to the terminal by a short walk and escalators. This station sits between Sadar Bazaar Cantonment and Shankar Vihar on Line 8 and gives you a direct rail option without using the Airport Express from T3.
Single-journey tickets on the Magenta Line usually cost between ₹30 and ₹60 for airport trips, depending on distance, and you buy them from the counters or TVMs at Terminal 1–IGI Airport station. Using a Delhi Metro smart card gives you a 10% discount on each ride and saves time versus queuing at peak periods.
A typical run from T1 to Hauz Khas on the Magenta Line takes about 25–30 minutes, and continuing to Botanical Garden in Noida adds roughly another 10–15 minutes. Factor in 10–15 minutes to walk from baggage claim at T1, reach the station, clear security screening for metro entry and get down to the platform.
For T3 or T2 passengers, the Magenta Line is only practical if you are comfortable adding one or two interchanges from your part of town rather than using the Airport Express from New Delhi Station. For example, Noida riders often go Botanical Garden → Hauz Khas on the Magenta Line, then connect by cab or bus for the last 8–10 km to T3 instead of detouring via New Delhi Railway Station.
Trains generally run from around 5:30 a.m. until about 11:00 p.m., with slightly shorter hours on some sections, so check the current DMRC timetable if you have a 2:00 a.m. departure from T1. Inside the train, you get basic seating, overhead grab rails, and dedicated women’s and senior citizen seating, but no luggage racks, so assume your suitcase stays by your legs.

- 4. Go down to the correct platform for trains toward Janakpuri West if you are heading into South Delhi or Noida via interchange at Hauz Khas or Kalkaji Mandir.
- 5. Board the train, keep larger bags near the door area, and expect a 5–7 minute frequency at busy times and slightly longer waits late night.
- 6. At your interchange station, such as Hauz Khas or Kalkaji Mandir, follow the line-color signs and allow 5–10 minutes to change platforms and continue your trip.
- 7. On the return to T1, budget at least 60–75 minutes from central South Delhi stations like Hauz Khas to be safe for check-in cutoffs.
One practical tip: if you land at T3 but are staying along the Magenta Line, a short ₹100–₹150 cab hop to T1, then metro from Terminal 1–IGI Airport station, often beats going all the way into New Delhi Station just to pick up the Airport Express.
