Smokers' Lounge

International

Free smokers’ room inside CPT International departures

This “Smokers’ Lounge” sits airside in the International terminal at Cape Town International Airport, past security and passport control, and functions more like a dedicated smoking room than a premium lounge. Entry is free, with no boarding pass class or lounge membership required, so expect basic seating and ventilation rather than the food, showers, or workspaces you’d find in the Bidvest, SLOW, or other paid lounges at CPT.

You’ll find it in the international departures area used for long-haul flights to Europe and the Middle East, not in the Domestic terminal. Signage in CPT International typically marks smoking rooms clearly, and staff at security or information desks can point you to the exact location by gate number on the day; plan 5–10 minutes to walk from most international gates to any smoking facility, as these are usually clustered away from general seating.

Facilities run on the bare minimum side: think hard chairs, four walls, and extraction fans, not barista coffee, spirits, or buffet spreads like you’d see in the Premier or SLOW lounges. There’s no documented food service, no self-serve drinks fridges, and no advertised business amenities such as printers or dedicated quiet zones, so eat and charge your phone in the main terminal or in a paid lounge before heading in for a cigarette.

Access rules are simple: adults can walk in from international departures during normal terminal operating hours that align with overnight long-haul banks, and there’s no need to show a Priority Pass card, a specific airline status level, or pay a rand amount at the door. Kids may be allowed in depending on local rules, but South African regulations on smoking near minors can be strict, so check any posted age limit signs at the entrance before bringing family inside.

Because there are no public reviews listing exact capacity or square meters, assume crowding during evening departure waves, especially around 18:00–23:00 when flights to Europe often leave. Air quality can feel dense when the room is busy, even with extraction running, so limit your time to a quick smoke break and then return to the general seating or your main lounge rather than camping out for an hour.

If you also hold access to Bidvest, Premier, SLOW, or an airline-run lounge in CPT International, the smart play is simple: use those lounges for food, power outlets, and Wi‑Fi, then pop into the Smokers’ Lounge 15–20 minutes before boarding for a last cigarette, keeping an eye on walking time back to your gate.
