Protocol Lounge

Almost no FlyerTalk reports mention Protocol Lounge at CPT

Protocol Lounge at Cape Town International Airport shows up on access lists but barely appears in blogs, Reddit threads, or FlyerTalk posts, which already tells you it’s not in the usual Priority Pass or airline-lounge rotation. Access is via protocol access only, typically pre-arranged through government, diplomatic, corporate, or VIP handlers, not walk-up or credit card entry. If your itinerary or employer mentions “Protocol” on your paperwork, this is probably the facility they mean.

You won’t find clear signage in the regular Domestic or International departures concourses pointing you here, and there’s no public pricing or day-pass info listed on the airport’s standard lounge pages. That lines up with the lack of trip reports anywhere: this feels more like a controlled-use service area than a lounge you choose between Bidvest and SLOW. If you don’t already have protocol arrangements confirmed in writing, assume you can’t just show up and pay.

Because there’s no reliable public review data, you shouldn’t bank on specific food options, shower access, or bar quality in Protocol Lounge the way you might with named facilities near the A gates or in the International wing. There are also no posted hours, which usually means operations follow the schedules of booked clients and not standard “05:00–22:00” airport patterns. For normal premium-cabin flyers at CPT, the airline and contract lounges in the International terminal remain the realistic choices.

If your ticket, company travel desk, or government liaison confirms protocol handling at Cape Town, get a direct contact number or email and ask exactly where to meet staff on arrival at CPT’s main terminal and at what time before departure. Don’t assume it works like a SLOW Lounge in Domestic where you tap in with a card. For everyone else flying through CPT, plan as if Protocol Lounge does not exist and pick among the standard lounges you can actually access. One practical tip: confirm your lounge access type at least 24 hours before departure so you’re not sorting this out at check-in with a long queue behind you.
