Fare is about COP $2,950, capped by your TuLlave card
TransMilenio route M86 is the main bus rapid transit link from El Dorado International Airport to central Bogotá. It serves both T1 and T2; stops sit outside the terminals on Avenida El Dorado (Calle 26). You pay with a reloadable TuLlave card, which you can buy and top up at airport or system kiosks during staffed hours.
From the airport stops, the M86 runs along the main TransMilenio trunk on Calle 26 and connects to several key stations, including Portal ElDorado. Travel time into the central corridor usually hits 45–70 minutes depending on traffic and time of day. This is slower than a taxi at midnight, but costs a fraction of the fare and uses dedicated bus lanes for most of the route.
Service on the M86 typically runs from early morning to late evening, roughly 5:00–23:00, though exact first/last departures vary by day. Buses come in intervals that can stretch to 15–20 minutes outside peak commuting times, so build a bit of margin if you have a fixed check-in time downtown. There’s no 24-hour operation, so after the last run you’re in taxi/app territory.
The TuLlave card itself costs a small fixed fee, usually under COP $10,000, plus whatever balance you load. One card can pay multiple riders by tapping it several times, as long as it has enough balance for each COP $2,950 ride. You tap in at the turnstiles before entering the station; there’s no tap-out on exit, so the cost is flat across the route.
Step-by-step from T1 arrivals:
- 1. Exit baggage claim at T1 and follow signs for “TransMilenio / Calle 26.”
- 2. Walk to the airport TransMilenio station on Avenida El Dorado; this usually takes 5–10 minutes.
- 3. Buy or reload a TuLlave card at the station kiosk and add at least COP $6,000 per person (outbound and return, if you like).
- 4. Enter through the turnstiles by tapping your TuLlave card once per rider.
- 5. On the platform, look for signs or displays showing route M86 Aeropuerto and wait at the marked boarding area.
- 6. Board the M86, move away from the doors, and keep your bag close; ride until your planned transfer or destination station.
- 7. At your station, exit directly to the street or transfer corridors; there’s no second tap or extra fare for the exit.
One last tip: keep small bills or coins ready for the TuLlave kiosk at El Dorado, since card readers and larger bills sometimes slow the line, especially around the 07:00–09:00 and 17:00–19:00 commute windows.
