Metro L9 Sud

Metro line to Zona Universitàr

Metro line to Zona Universitàr

Train L9 Sud hits both T1 and T2 in under 5 minutes

Metro L9 Sud runs straight into both BCN terminals: station “Aeroport T1” is under the main Josep Tarradellas Barcelona–El Prat T1 building, and “Aeroport T2” sits beside the T2 train station. Trains run roughly every 7–10 minutes from around 5:00 to midnight, with Friday/Saturday nights stretching later depending on the season.

A single airport metro ticket (Bitllet Aeroport) costs about €5.15 as of 2024 and is required when boarding or exiting at “Aeroport T1” or “Aeroport T2.” Standard T-usual or T-casual tickets only work once you’re away from the two airport stops. Keep a credit card or contactless payment handy for the ticket machines at both terminal stations.

L9 Sud heads to Zona Universitària in the west of Barcelona, with 15 stations along the way and direct connections to L1 at “Torrassa,” L5 at “Collblanc,” and the tram lines at “Zona Universitària.” Total ride from T1 to Zona Universitària is about 32–35 minutes, and from T2 it’s usually 2–3 minutes shorter.

From terminal to train: from T1 arrivals, follow the orange “Metro L9 Sud” signs down one level and expect a 5–8 minute walk to the gates. From T2, walk 3–5 minutes along the covered corridor toward the train and metro complex; look for the orange L9 Sud logo instead of the Renfe R2 signs.

If you land late, last departures from “Aeroport T1” toward Zona Universitària hover around 23:45–00:00 on weekdays. Friday and Saturday nights the line often runs into the early hours, but the exact last train time at T1 and T2 can shift, so check the TMB app or station boards before buying a ticket after 23:00.

Step-by-step from T1 to the city: 1) Exit baggage claim and follow orange “Metro L9 Sud” signs. 2) Ride the escalators or elevator down to the metro level. 3) Use a machine to buy the airport ticket (~€5.15). 4) Tap through the gates and board the next L9 Sud toward Zona Universitària. 5) For central Barcelona, change to L1 at Torrassa or L5 at Collblanc and ride 4–8 more stops depending on your station.

Step-by-step from T2 to the city: 1) After arrivals, follow signs to “Tren / Metro” for about 3–5 minutes. 2) At the metro hall, buy the specific airport ticket. 3) Enter via the L9 Sud gates, direction Zona Universitària. 4) Change at Torrassa (L1) or Collblanc (L5) for Sants, Plaça de Sants, or Catalunya within another 10–20 minutes of riding.

Watch the luggage: L9 Sud cars have open gangways but limited floor space during rush hour, especially between Torrassa and Collblanc around 8:00–9:30 and 17:30–19:30. If you’re dragging a 23 kg checked bag and a 10 kg cabin case, aim for the first or last car, which usually clears out slightly faster at intermediate stops like “Can Tries | Gornal.”

One last tip: if you know you’ll use more than three or four single airport tickets in 48 hours, run the math on a T-usual plus separate first airport ticket; the T-usual (zona 1) covers all L1, L3, L4, L5 and buses after you exit L9 Sud at stations like Torrassa or Collblanc.
