Happy Seafood

0 Open · 10:00-22:00

Herring before security is the whole reason Happy Seafood matters.

Most guides point you to Dutch seafood bars after security at Schiphol, but Happy Seafood sits landside in Terminal 0, open 10:00–22:00. That timing works for late-morning arrivals from Europe and most evening long-hauls. If you want traditional herring and don’t want to commit to going airside yet, this is the stop.

This is a counter-service setup before security, so factor in the extra 10–15 minutes to eat and then get through passport control and screening. Prices run higher than city street stands, but still below typical sit-down spots in AMS; expect to pay a few euros per herring portion and more if you add sides or a drink. Think “quick seafood bar” rather than full restaurant: order, stand or grab a small table, and move on.

Order the Dutch basics here: cured herring with onions, maybe kibbeling (fried fish pieces) if it’s on the board that day, and a beer or soft drink. This scratches the “I ate herring in the Netherlands” box without leaving the airport or hunting down the airside bar in another pier. If your flight boards from a Schengen gate, budget at least 30 minutes from your last bite to sitting at the gate.

Regulars use Happy Seafood as a landing buffer: grab herring landside, repack bags, then head to security once the line calms down a bit. That pre-security location in Terminal 0 also makes it workable for friends or family seeing you off; they can eat there with you without a boarding pass. The simple rule: if you want Dutch seafood and you’re still landside, stop here first, then clear security once you’re done.
