Ground transportation

Door-to-door rides start from the Main Terminal curb at TYS

At McGhee Tyson (TYS), ride-share pickups all happen outside the Main Terminal baggage claim on the ground level, right where taxis queue. Apps like Uber and Lyft use the same curbside zone as regular passenger pickup, so you just walk out from baggage claim in 1–2 minutes and watch for the car in the app.

There’s no off-property shuttle network at TYS, so if you skip rental cars and don’t have a hotel shuttle, your realistic choices are taxi or ride share from that same curb. For solo travelers going into Knoxville, ride shares often beat taxis on total price for a 12–15 mile trip to downtown, especially outside peak game days.

From wheels down to curb, budget about 15–25 minutes: 5–10 minutes to walk from most gates in the Main Terminal, a few minutes to get bags, then another 5–10 minutes for the car to reach the pickup point after you request it. Request the ride only after you’re at baggage claim carousel numbers 1–4 so your driver isn’t looping the airport.

For late arrivals after 22:00, ride-share coverage can thin out compared with 17:00–20:00, so check the app for ETA and pricing as soon as you land. A typical downtown Knoxville ride can run around 20–35 minutes depending on I‑140 and US‑129 traffic, with surge pricing most likely during University of Tennessee football weekends.

Most drivers stick to the default pickup pin that your app drops near the center doors of baggage claim, so if you walk to the far left or right of the curb, tell the driver in the in-app chat which door number you’re standing by. If you’re traveling as a group of 3–4 with checked bags, tap “UberXL” or the equivalent larger option so you’re not trying to cram four rollaboards into a compact sedan.

Practical tip: Screenshot your destination address before you land so weak cell service in the Main Terminal doesn’t slow down your request at the curb.
