Most TYS hotels sit within a 5–10 minute shuttle ride
At McGhee Tyson Airport’s Main Terminal, hotel shuttles work best for overnight guests staying at properties along Alcoa Highway or in nearby Alcoa and Maryville, usually within a 3–6 mile radius. These are run by the hotels themselves, not by the airport, and rides typically take less than 10 minutes door to door in normal traffic.
The airport states clearly on FlyKnoxville that it does not operate any off-property shuttle service, so every van you see at arrivals is tied to a specific hotel. Most participating hotels group pick-ups in 15–30 minute windows, often synced to evening arrivals between 5:00 pm and 11:00 pm, and some only run limited hours on weekends or holidays.
Pick-up usually happens outside baggage claim at the Main Terminal, ground level, where commercial vehicles line up in marked lanes numbered near doors 3 and 4. You’ll often see vans with brand logos for chain hotels in the Alcoa area, and drivers typically check your room confirmation or hotel name before loading bags.
Shuttles from nearby TYS hotels are commonly included in the room rate, so you’re not paying the $10–$25 you might spend on a rideshare for the same 4–6 mile hop. Tipping a couple of dollars per checked bag is still standard, especially if the driver helps haul luggage into the van or up to the curb.
Because McGhee Tyson is small and efficient, it usually takes only 10–15 minutes from wheels down to curb if you’re carry-on only, and around 20 minutes if you’re waiting at one of the two baggage carousels. Call your hotel as soon as the aircraft parks at the gate so they can time the shuttle to meet you.
For very early flights before 6:00 am or late arrivals after midnight, some hotels around TYS run shuttles only on request, not on a fixed schedule. In those cases, front desks usually ask for your flight number and ETA, then send the van once you’ve collected bags and confirmed you’re standing outside the Main Terminal doors.
One practical tip: when booking, ask the hotel directly, “Do you have a free airport shuttle to TYS, and what are the exact hours?” and get the answer in writing on your confirmation email so you’re not stuck calling a rideshare at 5:30 am.
