20‑minute drive puts downtown Knoxville within easy rental-car range

Rental cars at McGhee Tyson Airport sit in the Main Terminal complex, so you walk, you don’t shuttle. Counters line the baggage claim level, and vehicles park in the adjacent garage, usually a 2–5 minute walk from the carousel. If you’re heading to Knoxville, Maryville, Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, or farther into East Tennessee, a rental car beats waiting on sporadic hotel shuttles or piecing together multiple rideshares.

Most national brands keep full fleets on site at TYS, with standard daily rates that spike on UT football weekends and peak Smokies seasons in June and October. You pick up and return at the same Main Terminal garage, so there’s no off-airport bus loop to factor in. Build 10 extra minutes into your return for refueling along Alcoa Highway (US‑129) before you pull into the rental return lanes.

Alcoa Highway (US‑129) is your main artery out of the airport, with about 12 miles to Market Square in downtown Knoxville and roughly 5 miles to central Alcoa. Plan on 15–25 minutes to downtown in light traffic, 30+ on weekday rush around 7–9 a.m. and 4–6 p.m. If you’re driving on to Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge, assume 50–80 minutes depending on season and US‑441 traffic.

All rentals live landside, so you reach them without re-clearing security after returning the car. Most counters mirror flight banks and typically track early-morning departures starting around 5:00 a.m. and late arrivals close to 11:00 p.m. If your flight lands after 11:30 p.m., call the local desk number on your confirmation to confirm they’ll hold the keys and stay open for your delayed arrival.

Winter in East Tennessee occasionally means icy patches on US‑129 and I‑40, especially in January and February, even if the forecast only shows flurries. If you’re booking December through February, reserve a vehicle with good tires and disable cruise control on wet or slushy stretches. Final tip: snap photos of all four sides of the car and the fuel gauge on the return level before you hand over the keys, so any damage or fuel disputes are easy to push back on later.
