Route 30 and 32 buses link TPA to downtown for a few dollars

Public bus service at Tampa International Airport runs from the Main Terminal, Ground Transportation Center, with Hillsborough Area Regional Transit (HART) routes 30 and 32 connecting the airport to downtown Tampa and Westshore for a low fare compared to taxis or rideshares. These routes operate on fixed schedules, so check current times before you commit to a tight arrival or departure window.

HART Route 30 typically runs between TPA and downtown Tampa via Kennedy Boulevard, while Route 32 runs between TPA and the Netpark Transfer Center on 56th Street, also passing near downtown; both pick up on the west end of the Main Terminal at the Ground Transportation Center, near the Red and Blue baggage claim areas. Signs marked “Public Bus” point you toward the correct island once you exit baggage claim.

Expect standard local HART fares in the ~$2 range per ride, with discounted passes and transfers available on HART smart cards or apps; this is usually a fraction of the cost of a taxi meter from TPA to central Tampa. Have a contactless card or exact small bills ready, because drivers generally do not make change on local routes.

Step-by-step: using the public bus at TPA

  • 1. Deplane and follow signs to Baggage Claim. From any Airside, ride the people mover to the Main Terminal, Level 3, then take the escalator or elevator down to baggage claim on Level 1.
  • 2. Walk to the Ground Transportation Center. From baggage claim on Level 1, follow the “Ground Transportation” and “Public Bus” signs toward the west end of the Main Terminal; this usually takes about 5–10 minutes at a normal walking pace.
  • 3. Find the HART bus stop area. Look for the marked HART stops at the Ground Transportation Center, where Route 30 and Route 32 pick up; route numbers and destination names are displayed on the front of each bus.
  • 4. Pay your fare as you board. Have around $2–3 ready on a card or in cash, or use any valid HART pass, and tell the driver your destination if you are unsure which downtown stop fits your plans.
  • 5. Ride to your stop and exit promptly. Watch the stop announcements for downtown Tampa landmarks, major cross streets, or the Netpark Transfer Center on Route 32, and pull the signal cord in advance so the bus stops in time.

One practical tip: build at least 30 extra minutes into your schedule for bus headways and traffic between the Main Terminal and downtown, especially during weekday rush hours on Kennedy Boulevard and I-275.
