The terminals
Terminal 1 is the international terminal. The domestic precinct is separate: Terminal 3 is Qantas domestic, and Terminal 2 handles Virgin Australia, Jetstar, and other domestic carriers. Because T1 is physically apart from T2/T3, connecting between an international and a domestic flight means crossing the airport. The two ways to do it are the Airport Link train (one stop between the International and Domestic stations) or the T-Bus transfer shuttle. If you are connecting on a single Qantas itinerary they may handle bags through, but always leave real time for the crossing plus immigration and customs.
Getting into the city
The Airport Link train runs from both the International and Domestic stations into central Sydney — Central, Town Hall, and Wynyard — in around 15 minutes, tying into the wider Sydney Trains network. It is fast, but note the stations levy a gate access fee on top of the normal fare, which makes it pricier than a typical suburban trip. Taxis and rideshare are plentiful; the airport is only about 9 km south of the CBD, so the road trip is short outside peak hours.
Worth knowing
Sydney has a strict overnight curfew (roughly 11 pm to 6 am) that limits movements, which can push schedules and affect delayed flights near those hours. For a connection that crosses between international and domestic, don’t cut it fine — the terminal transfer, plus clearing customs on arrival, is the part that catches people out.
