Old low-cost Terminal 1 at SOF runs mostly Wizz Air

Terminal 1 at Sofia Airport (T1) handles low-cost carriers like Wizz Air and some Ryanair flights, in an older building a short shuttle ride or walk from Terminal 2. It feels stripped down compared with T2, with fewer services and a simpler gate layout, so build a time buffer if you’re used to bigger hubs.

Check-in counters for Wizz Air and Ryanair sit just past the main entrance doors, with security a short walk beyond them, so you can move from curb to checkpoint in under 10 minutes off-peak. The terminal is compact, but queues spike in the early morning departure bank, so assume at least 60–75 minutes from curb to gate for 06:00–09:00 flights.

Once you clear security, the departures area runs in a straight line with only a handful of gates, so walking time from security to the furthest gate rarely exceeds 5 minutes. There’s a small cluster of seats near each gate, but power outlets are limited, so charge devices before leaving your hotel or plug in at the food outlets if you see a free socket.

Fast Food Corner sits in the departures zone and sells burgers, fries, and basic hot meals, with mains usually landing in the 10–20 BGN range. Quality runs “fuel stop” rather than highlight, so treat it as a way to fill up before a Wizz Air hop when you know buy-on-board prices will be higher.

Café Bar and Coffee Bar both serve espresso drinks and bottled drinks, with coffee typically around 4–6 BGN and a beer closer to 7–8 BGN. These counters are near the central seating area by the gates, so they double as the default waiting spot if you want a table instead of sitting right at the boarding door.

The small Snack Bar closer to some gates handles grab-and-go items like chips, chocolate bars, and soft drinks, handy if you’re boarding a 2–3 hour Ryanair leg. Expect airport markups: a basic bottled water can run 3–4 BGN, which is still cheaper than most in-flight prices on low-cost carriers out of SOF.

The VIP Lounge in Terminal 1 sits airside near the departures area and is mainly used for pre-booked or paid entries rather than big alliance memberships. Space is limited compared with T2 lounges, so it works as a quiet corner before a flight, but don’t plan a long layover here expecting showers or extensive hot food options.

Duty Free stands near the gates and sells liquor, tobacco, and cosmetics, with regional wines and rakia often at better prices than downtown bars. For reading material and last-minute snacks, Relay serves newspapers, magazines, and small travel items, while the Souvenir Shop carries Bulgarian-themed gifts like rose oil products and fridge magnets in the 5–20 BGN range.

On arrival at Terminal 1, baggage claim sits directly beyond passport control, and you usually reach the single belt area in under 5 minutes from the aircraft door when using a bus gate. Bags for Wizz and Ryanair can stack up during peak waves, so allow 20–30 minutes for luggage if you’re on a full flight.

Ground transport is the weak point at T1: several Hyatt Regency Sofia guests report stepping outside late at night to find no taxis waiting, unlike T2’s “OK” taxi rank. In that case, the move is to walk or shuttle over to T2 in about 10–15 minutes and grab an official OK Taxi from the signed stand in front of that terminal.

Regular Sofia flyers often try to book flights out of Terminal 2 instead of T1 so they can rely on the OK Taxi system and slightly better facilities. If you’re locked into Wizz Air or Ryanair from T1, pre-book a taxi pickup or ride-share with a specific time and location at the T1 curb and screenshot the driver details before you land.

One tip: if your inbound lands at T1 but your hotel shuttles or pre-arranged taxis only serve T2, plan on a 10–15 minute connection between terminals and factor that into your pickup time window.
