Taxi queue sits just outside the main Terminal exits

The official taxi queue at Salt Lake City International Airport sits directly outside the main Terminal on the ground level, steps from baggage claim carousels 4–8. Follow the overhead signs for “Ground Transportation” and then “Taxis,” and you’ll hit the marked island with a dispatcher stand and painted taxi symbols on the curb.

Taxis operate 24/7 at SLC, with cars usually lined up by the Terminal door nearest baggage claim carousel 6. During peak morning bank (about 7:00–9:00 a.m.) and evening arrivals (around 9:00–11:00 p.m.), expect a 5–10 minute wait; outside those windows you can often walk straight into a cab.

Most taxis run on a meter with a starting fee around $2–$3 and a per-mile rate in the $2–$3 range, so a typical ride from the Terminal to downtown Salt Lake City (about 7–9 miles) lands roughly in the $25–$35 band before tip. Drivers accept major credit cards and cash, and many cabs display posted fare examples for downtown, Sugar House, and the University of Utah.

Rides from SLC to Park City usually take 40–50 minutes for the 35–40 mile drive, and meter totals can climb past $100 in winter traffic, so some taxi companies at the queue advertise flat rates; you’ll see laminated rate sheets at the dispatcher podium listing common ski-town prices by zone. Always confirm the rate to Park City, Cottonwood Canyons, or Ogden before you put bags in the trunk.

The taxi island sits in the same curb zone as app-based rides, shuttles, and hotel vans, but each has its own signed section with lettered poles (A, B, C, etc.), and taxis usually occupy the section closest to Door 6 on the Ground Level. If you cross to the wrong island, look for the yellow “Taxi” overhead sign and walk 30–50 yards along the curb.

Dispatchers typically line passengers into a single-file column and feed the first open cab, so groups landing on the same flight around Gate A17 or B20 can hop in separate taxis quickly. One taxi comfortably fits 3–4 people with 2–3 checked bags; with 4 ski bags coming off an oversized carousel, ask the dispatcher for a minivan-style cab.

Step-by-step from plane to taxi queue

  • 1. Deplane into the Terminal concourse and follow signs toward “Baggage Claim / Ground Transportation,” usually a 5–10 minute walk from most A and B gates.
  • 2. Take the escalator or elevator down to the lower level and proceed to the assigned baggage carousel number listed on the monitors (for example, Carousel 6 for many Delta flights).
  • 3. Once you have bags, follow the overhead “Ground Transportation” signs toward the sliding doors near carousels 4–8 and exit to the curb.
  • 4. Cross the first traffic lane to the center island marked “Taxi,” usually closest to Door 6, and join the taxi line that forms along the marked queue rails.
  • 5. Tell the dispatcher or driver your exact destination with ZIP code, confirm approximate fare (for example, “downtown near 200 South, around $30?”), and then load bags into the trunk.
  • 6. On arrival, pay by card or cash, add a tip of 15–20% if service was solid, and keep the printed receipt in case you left anything in the cab.

One practical tip: if your group is 3–4 people heading downtown, a single taxi from the Terminal usually beats per-person shuttle pricing and saves 10–15 minutes of extra stops.
