Ground transport

Ground transport : Best for travelers who prefer app dispatch and want an alternative to taxi queues, especially for straightforward trips into the metro area.

Flat-rate taxis start at $12; rideshare skips that line

At SJU, rideshare (mainly Uber) works well if you like app dispatch and want to avoid the official taxi queue, which serves Terminals A and B with fixed zone fares starting around $12–$15 into Isla Verde and higher into Condado and Old San Juan. Rideshare pricing is dynamic, so sometimes you beat the flat rate, sometimes you don’t, but you always skip filling out the paper taxi slip at the kiosk.

Terminals A and B both funnel arrivals toward the same public curb, and you meet rideshare drivers outside the baggage claim area, not inside the terminal. Plan on 5–10 minutes from stepping out of customs to reaching the pickup point, depending on crowds from mainland US arrivals. The app pins can be a bit off, so watch the zone label in your app and match it to the sign at the curb.

For metro San Juan trips under 30 minutes to Isla Verde, Condado, or Old San Juan, rideshare usually makes the most sense compared with the fixed taxi zones that can creep over $20 when you add surcharges. Longer runs, like to Dorado or Río Grande resorts that run 35–60 minutes, may price out higher on Uber during surge times than the negotiated taxi or hotel car, so always compare before you request.

Pickup times in daytime bank hours (10:00–18:00) often sit in the 5–8 minute range, but late-night arrivals after 23:00 sometimes see 15-minute waits as drivers cycle back from San Juan. If your flight lands with multiple mainland banks in A and B between 00:00 and 01:00, surge pricing can hit 1.5x–2x, which wipes out any savings over the taxi zone chart posted near baggage claim.

Most drivers use smaller sedans, so if you have 3–4 checked bags or 3+ adults, pick UberXL or the local large-vehicle option in the app; figure $8–$15 more than standard for enough trunk space. Child seats typically are not provided, and Puerto Rico car seat law applies, so families with kids under 8 often pre-arrange a shuttle instead of betting on a driver with a seat.

Tip: Order your ride only after you step outside Terminal A or B and see the curb number sign; if you drop the pin while still at the carousel, the driver can get sent to the wrong level and start the 5-minute cancellation clock against you.
