Bus Varies : Best for price-sensitive travelers who can tolerate slower

Bus fares into San Juan run far cheaper than taxis

Public buses from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) are the budget play if you care more about saving dollars than saving time. The local AMA (Autoridad Metropolitana de Autobuses) system connects the airport to San Juan and Carolina for just a few dollars per ride, versus $20–$30 for many taxi trips into Condado or Old San Juan. Expect the bus to be slower and less direct than a cab or rideshare.

Buses pick up outside the terminals serving gates in concourses A and B, on the arrivals level near the public transport area. Look for posted AMA route numbers on signs by the curb; these can change, so confirm the current route to your neighborhood (Condado, Isla Verde, Old San Juan, etc.) with the information desk inside the terminal before you walk out. Service is generally oriented around daytime and early evening hours.

Journey time varies a lot: a taxi can cover the 7–9 miles to Old San Juan in around 20–30 minutes, while a bus with multiple stops can easily stretch that to 45–75 minutes. If your flight lands late at night or after 21:00, don’t count on a bus being your backup; plan on taxis from the official stand instead. Build a healthy buffer if you’re heading to a cruise departure at the piers in Old San Juan.

Fares on AMA buses usually run just a couple of dollars per person, paid in exact cash to the driver in US dollars. There’s no contactless tap or app-based payment common on some mainland systems, and you won’t find luggage surcharges like on private shuttles. That low price is the whole appeal, especially if you’re staying in the Isla Verde corridor only 1–2 miles from the airport.

Here’s how to use public buses at SJU in five steps.

  • 1. Check service hours: Before landing, confirm AMA airport routes and last departure times for your day; aim to land or clear customs at least 30–45 minutes before the last scheduled bus.
  • 2. Get small bills: At the terminal, break larger notes at a shop near gates in concourse A or B so you have $1s and $5s for the exact-fare box.
  • 3. Confirm your route: At the airport information desk near arrivals, ask for the current AMA route number to your area, like Condado or Old San Juan, and note the expected travel time in minutes.
  • 4. Walk to the bus stop: Follow signs for ground transportation on the arrivals level and wait only at the marked public bus stop, not the taxi queue or tour bus lanes.
  • 5. Pay and hold tight: Board at the front door, pay the driver in exact cash, keep your smaller bags on your lap if possible, and watch for your stop or use a map app to track progress over the 5–10 mile run into town.

Practical tip: if your trip starts or ends during rush hour between roughly 07:00–09:00 or 16:00–18:30, double whatever Google Maps says for bus travel time and don’t book tight same-day connections or tours off the airport.
