Bus to San Juan runs under $2, but moves slowly
Public buses from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) run by the local AMA system and usually cost under $2 per person, making them the cheapest way out of Terminals A and B. Stops sit on the main road just outside the terminal area, so you walk 5–10 minutes from baggage claim to reach them.
Routes generally operate between about 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., not 24/7, so late-night arrivals to SJU often miss the last bus and end up in a taxi or rideshare. Headways can stretch to 30–60 minutes, and traffic on PR-26 into Isla Verde and Santurce can double the published travel time.
Most airport buses connect SJU with nearby areas like Isla Verde, Condado, and Old San Juan, usually requiring at least one transfer at a neighborhood stop. With traffic and a connection, the ride from the airport to Old San Juan can take 60–90 minutes, compared with 20–30 minutes in a taxi.
Payment is typically in cash, small bills and coins only; cards are not a safe bet on board. The driver sets the fare, usually around the local AMA base fare of roughly $0.75–$1.50 per ride, and there is no checked-luggage setup, so you carry bags into the seating area yourself.
Public buses at SJU sit on the public side of the airport, so you reach them after exiting the arrivals hall from either Terminal A or Terminal B. Look for posted AMA route maps near the curb and confirm with the driver that the bus passes your neighborhood, especially if you are heading toward Condado or Old San Juan.
Tip: If you land at SJU after about 6:00 p.m., check the current AMA schedule before committing; if the next bus is more than 45 minutes out, a shared taxi from the airport taxi stand may be the better move.
