App-set fares beat curb negotiations at SGN with GrabCar

GrabCar runs 24/7 from both terminals T1 (domestic) and T2 (international) at Tan Son Nhat, giving you upfront pricing in the app in Vietnamese dong before you leave the arrivals hall. You request the car in the Grab app, see the plate number and driver rating, and watch the car’s ETA drop from about 8–15 minutes during normal hours to 20–30 minutes in peak rush around 17:00–19:00.

From T2, most drivers meet at the public pick-up lanes on the ground floor, usually in lanes 3–5 opposite the main exit doors numbered 1–6. At T1, pick-up is typically outside the arrivals curb, also on the ground floor, with the app map snapping to the correct side of the terminal once your GPS locks. A ride to central District 1 (Ben Thanh Market area) usually runs around 80,000–150,000 VND depending on time of day and surge.

Payment works in the app with cards or cash to the driver, with the total shown in large digits before you confirm the booking. For a standard GrabCar 4-seater, normal daytime rates to Phu Nhuan or District 3 tend to land in the 60,000–120,000 VND range. Larger groups can pick GrabCar 7-seater in the app, which often prices 30–50% higher but fits 4–5 people with luggage more comfortably.

To make pick-up smoother, send the driver a quick text in the in-app chat with your terminal code (T1 or T2) and door number, for example “T2, Gate 3” so they pull into the right lane the first time. Average wait at the curb is around 5 minutes after the driver shows as “Arrived” in the app, especially when traffic around the airport circle road backs up. Drivers usually call from a local +84 mobile number if they can’t see you in the crowd.

Step-by-step from plane to GrabCar

  • 1. After landing, clear immigration and baggage claim in T1 or T2.
  • 2. Connect to airport Wi‑Fi or local data before exiting customs.
  • 3. Open the Grab app, set pickup to “Tan Son Nhat T1” or “Tan Son Nhat T2.”
  • 4. Choose GrabCar 4 or GrabCar 7 and check the VND fare on screen.
  • 5. Confirm payment method (card in app or cash) and hit “Book.”
  • 6. Walk to the arrivals curb and stand by the door number shown on the app pin.
  • 7. Match the license plate and car model in the app before getting in.
  • 8. On arrival in town, pay any remaining cash balance and check the final fare on the receipt page.

One last tip: order the car only after you step into the public arrivals area; from wheels down to curb can easily take 25–45 minutes at SGN immigration, and calling it too early just runs the clock on driver waiting fees.
