Bus 49

Airport–District 1

Airport–District 1

40-minute run from SGN to District 1 by Bus 49

Bus 49 runs between Tan Son Nhat (SGN) and District 1 in about 35–50 minutes, depending on Nguyễn Văn Trỗi traffic. It’s the airport public-bus option aimed at getting you closer to central hotels without the very low fares (and crowd levels) of Bus 109 or 152.

At SGN, Bus 49 stops outside both T1 (domestic) and T2 (international) on the arrivals level; look for yellow airport bus signs near the curb within a 2–5 minute walk from the exit doors. It’s landside, so you just walk out of baggage claim, turn toward the main road, and line up at the marked stop.

Ticket prices on similar airport buses like 109 run around 15,000–20,000 VND, so expect Bus 49 to sit slightly higher than that but still well under a taxi’s 150,000–250,000 VND meter into District 1. Pay the conductor in cash VND onboard; cards and USD usually don’t work, so hit the airport ATM first and pull at least 100,000 VND.

Bus 49 typically operates from early morning (around 05:00–05:30) to late evening (about 22:00–23:00); outside those hours you’re into taxi or ride-hail territory. Headways on airport buses in Ho Chi Minh City often sit around 20–30 minutes, so budget for that gap instead of assuming a metro-style 5-minute wait.

The route targets District 1 streets where many hotels and guesthouses sit, usually running along central corridors like Lê Duẩn or Hàm Nghi within a 5–15 minute walk of Bến Thành Market. If you’re staying farther out in District 3 or District 4, expect to transfer to a local bus or grab a short 20,000–40,000 VND motorbike ride from the last stop.

Handling luggage is straightforward: buses similar to 49 typically allow cabin-size suitcases in the aisle area, but a 23 kg checked bag can be awkward on a crowded run from SGN. Aim for a seat near the door if you board at T2, since that’s where most long-haul passengers with 1–2 large bags per person pile in.

Step-by-step: Using Bus 49 from SGN to District 1

  • 1. After landing in T1 or T2, clear immigration and baggage claim, then exit to the arrivals curb within 10–20 minutes if lines are light.
  • 2. Follow airport bus signs for 2–5 minutes to the marked stop for Bus 49 near the main access road outside your terminal.
  • 3. Withdraw cash at an airport ATM and keep at least 50,000–100,000 VND on hand; small bills (10,000–20,000 notes) help with paying the conductor.
  • 4. When Bus 49 pulls in, confirm “District 1?” with the driver or conductor, then board using the front or middle door and find a seat near the exit if you have big luggage.
  • 5. Pay your fare in cash once seated; expect a price in the same ballpark as Bus 109’s 15,000–20,000 VND but slightly higher, and keep the paper ticket for the ride.
  • 6. Watch your mapping app and ring the bell 1 stop early as you approach your District 1 landmark, usually 5–10 minutes after passing around Bến Thành Market.
  • 7. Step off, move bags clear of the doors immediately, and if needed grab a 1–2 km hop by motorbike taxi or car to your hotel for another 20,000–50,000 VND.

One last tip: build a 30-minute buffer for traffic and bus intervals on the way to SGN, and aim to be at T2 or T1 at least 2 hours before a domestic flight and 3 hours before an international one.
