Rideshare /longer waits at peak hours/ around half the official taxi price

Half-price rides if you’re willing to cross the PVR bridge

At Puerto Vallarta International (PVR) Terminal A arrivals, Uber rides usually come out to around half the official airport taxi price to the Hotel Zone or Romantic Zone, but pickups do not happen at the arrivals curb. Drivers avoid the signed taxi area by the doors and instead meet riders across the pedestrian bridge over Highway 200.

After you clear customs in Terminal A or B, follow the exit signs and walk past the gauntlet of timeshare desks for about 3–5 minutes until you reach the doors facing the main road. You’ll cross the pedestrian bridge over the highway, then head toward the OXXO convenience store or nearby parking lot; this is where most Uber drivers are actually willing to stop.

Uber technically operates in Puerto Vallarta, but because of local taxi politics drivers usually won’t enter the official arrivals lane. Forum regulars say they order the ride only after they’re standing near OXXO, then drop a precise pin in the app and immediately send a message like “by OXXO door in blue backpack” to cut down on missed connections.

Wait times run anywhere from 5–25 minutes, with longer waits and more cancellations right after big flight banks or on cruise-ship days. Several travellers mention drivers bailing if airport security starts hovering near the informal pickup spots, so keep the app open and be ready to confirm the license plate and last three digits as soon as a car pulls in.

GPS around PVR can be off by 20–50 meters, so drivers sometimes sit on the wrong side of the highway or in the opposite parking lot. If your car icon looks stalled in the app, ping the driver with a short Spanish note like “en OXXO del puente del aeropuerto” or just send a photo of the store sign to get them to the right side.

Prices jump in high season (roughly November–April) and on days with multiple cruise ships in town, so that “half the taxi” savings isn’t automatic. Regulars open both Uber and DiDi, compare fares and wait times, and grab whichever shows a car arriving in under 10 minutes for the lower price.

Step-by-step: using Uber from PVR

  • 1. Land at PVR Terminal A or B and clear immigration and customs; this usually takes 20–45 minutes in high season.
  • 2. Exit into arrivals, walk straight through the timeshare corridor for about 100–150 meters, and head out the main doors toward the highway.
  • 3. Take the pedestrian bridge over Highway 200; with a rollaboard this adds another 5–10 minutes of walking, including the ramps.
  • 4. Once you’re on the far side, stand near the OXXO or clearly marked business and only then open the Uber app to request your ride.
  • 5. Drop the pin exactly where you’re standing, check the estimated fare against local airport taxi quotes, and confirm the price looks roughly 40–60% lower before hitting “Confirm.”
  • 6. Immediately message the driver with a simple description (e.g., “by OXXO door, red suitcase”) to cut through any GPS confusion.
  • 7. When the car arrives, match the plate and driver name in the app, throw your bags in, and double-check the destination spelling (e.g., your specific hotel in the Romantic Zone) before the car pulls away.

One tip: screenshot your hotel address with Google Maps before you land so if cell data is spotty outside PVR, you can still show the driver exactly where to go.
