T1’s Air New Zealand Lounge usually beats Aspire for space and food

FlyerTalk regulars with access to both lounges in T1 consistently start in the Air New Zealand International Lounge, saying it feels calmer and better stocked than Aspire during peak evening departures to Auckland and Asia. It sits airside in Terminal T1 international, past passport control, and mainly serves Star Alliance carriers.

The lounge runs 24/7, which is rare at PER and handy for late-night red-eyes and early-morning arrivals into T1. Access is for Air New Zealand premium cabins and eligible Airpoints/Star Alliance status; staff do check boarding passes and digital cards at the desk right by the entrance.

Food quality is the big differentiator versus Aspire, according to that 2024 FlyerTalk thread on PER lounges. Expect proper hot dishes at main meal times, usually including at least one pasta or curry plus sides, along with cold salads and snacks set out along a single buffet line. Portions are self-serve, so you can eat a full meal before a 7–10 hour leg to Auckland.

Drinks run from self-pour soft drinks and juices to beer and wine, with decent New Zealand labels appearing before evening departures. Coffee comes from a push-button machine that handles espresso, flat whites, and long blacks reasonably well, and there’s basic tea gear next to the cups. Everything is complimentary once you’re inside; you won’t see separate price tags at the bar.

Seating is largely lounge chairs and small tables, spread across a few zones so you’re not packed in one big hall. Power outlets are dotted between chairs, but bring a Type I adapter if you’re not already using an AU/NZ plug. Wi‑Fi is lounge-specific, with the password on small signs near the buffet and usually fast enough for streaming while you wait for boarding calls from nearby T1 gates.

What regulars do: they head straight to the Air New Zealand lounge first, then only bother walking over to Aspire in T1 if the NZ lounge hits capacity around major departure waves. One practical tip: plan to eat your main meal here 45–60 minutes before boarding, then switch to soft drinks so you’re not boarding a long-haul flight tipsy and dehydrated.
