Nightliner N12

Night bus

Night bus 20-30 min airport–city depending on routing $3-4 single; covered by many VGN night/day tickets

Land at 01:00 on Friday or Saturday and N12 is it

The Nightliner N12 is basically the only public bus linking Nuremberg Airport T1 with the city once the U2 shuts down, running roughly every 60 minutes on late Friday and Saturday nights (and some holiday eves). The ride into the center takes about 20–30 minutes depending on routing, so it’s faster than waiting around to figure out a rideshare that may not show.

A single N12 ride usually costs around $3–4 at current VGN prices, and the line accepts standard VGN tickets, including NachtTickets and day tickets that are still valid into the night. That means if your VGN day pass covers zones to NUE, you just board the night bus and ride without buying a special night supplement. For a solo traveler, that’s usually a third of the price of an airport–city taxi run.

The stop sits by the airport bus area outside T1, but signage for “Nightliner N12” is easy to miss and the timetable info on the pole is thin compared with the VGN app. Regulars check exact departure times in the VGN app before they walk out of the terminal so they’re not standing in front of a mostly closed airport for 50–60 minutes in January wind.

The N12 route often runs as a one-way loop at night, so the path into central Nuremberg doesn’t always match the familiar daytime 32/33 lines. Figure on 20 minutes if you’re hopping off near Rathenauplatz, closer to 30 minutes if you’re staying near the Hauptbahnhof area and the loop takes a longer swing through town. If you’re used to point‑to‑point symmetry, this loop pattern can feel strange but it’s normal for Nightliners.

Complaints focus on two things: limited departures and late‑night vibes. Miss an 02:00 bus and the next N12 can be around 03:00, which feels long if you’re outside T1 in March at 3 °C. You also share the bus with club traffic, so occasional rowdy groups around closing time are part of the deal; families with small kids sometimes opt for a taxi into town and keep Nightliners for the ride back from bars.

Step-by-step from T1 to city on N12

  • 1. On landing, check the VGN app for “Nightliner N12” from “Nürnberg Flughafen” and note the exact minute of the next departure (headways are about 60 minutes).
  • 2. Buy a VGN single ticket (around $3–4) or NachtTicket at a machine in T1 if you don’t already have a valid day or night ticket covering the airport zone.
  • 3. Exit T1 to the bus stands and look for the stop marked for night lines or specifically “N12”; don’t rely only on big overhead signs, check the small stop plate.
  • 4. When the N12 rolls up, board through the front or middle doors, validate a paper ticket if needed, and keep bags close to avoid blocking the aisle during late‑night crowds.
  • 5. Watch the in‑bus display or use a maps app to hop off at your stop near Rathenauplatz, Hauptbahnhof, or your connecting tram/bus, then walk or transfer the last few minutes to your hotel.

One tip: if your arrival is on a weekday after midnight, don’t plan on N12 at all—check U2 times or budget for a taxi instead.
