Bus 30, 33, and N12: straight shot for Erlangen and the northern suburbs

From T1 at Nuremberg Airport, buses 30 and 33 run directly toward Erlangen and through northern Nürnberg districts like Buchenbühl and Thon, cutting out the U2 + regional train combo many people default to. Real travel time airport–Erlangen usually lands around 40–45 minutes, even though the schedule sometimes claims closer to 35.

Daytime frequency sits around every 20–30 minutes for both 30 and 33, but riders report that evenings and weekends feel more like a 30-minute wait, especially after 20:00. If your destination is in Erlangen or along the Buchenbühl/Thon corridor, staying on 30/33 from the airport stop outside T1 often saves one transfer compared with going into Nürnberg Hbf first.

Tickets run roughly $3–4 for trips within Nürnberg city limits and about $4–7 for the full airport–Erlangen ride, all inside the VGN fare system. You can buy from the ticket machine near the airport bus stop by T1 or via the VGN app before boarding; drivers on these routes do not always handle complex ticket questions quickly when a line of staff is piling in at shift-change.

Nightliner N12 is the late-night backup when the U2 shuts down, running hourly on weekend nights and linking the airport to the city after around 01:00. Local late-night regulars treat N12 as the “it’s 2am and I missed the last train” safety net and always check the exact departure in the VGN app, because missing a once-per-hour bus can lock you into a long wait at the T1 curb.

Watch out for crowding on 30 and 33 around shift-change times, especially early morning around 06:00 and late evening after 22:00, when many airport employees ride the same coaches. Nightliner N12 has another quirk: the one-direction routing and odd stop pattern confuse newcomers, and the small map at the airport stop by T1 does not explain it well.

What regulars do: if a fast RE train to Erlangen leaves Nürnberg Hbf in the next 20 minutes, many will ride U2 from NUE to Hauptbahnhof and swap there instead of waiting at the airport for 30/33. If you stick with 30 or 33, check real-time info in the VGN app before you walk out of T1 so you are not standing in the wind for an unnecessary extra 20 minutes.
