T1

T1’s main WHSmith is your last-minute book stop

This WHSmith in Terminal 1 sits airside after security, so you can grab a paperback or puzzle book on the walk to the gates. It’s the standard UK airport setup: paperbacks, magazines, stationery and a wall of drinks and snacks. Expect typical high-street pricing, not duty free levels, but you’ll still find 2-for-£8 or similar multibuy deals on paperbacks and bestsellers.

Opening hours usually track the first and last departures of the day, roughly from around 04:00 until late evening, so early Ryanair or Jet2 flights still have time for a quick browse. Stock leans heavily on current fiction, crime series and easy reads aimed at a 2–4 hour flight, plus children’s activity books that work well on the AMS or LHR runs.

Drinks and snacks run from bottled water and colas to grab-and-go sandwiches, crisps and chocolate bars, handy if the only other option near your gate is a busy coffee chain. You’ll also see travel-sized toiletries, basic chargers and UK-to-EU adaptors, useful if you forgot something during check-in at T1.

Payment is card-heavy here; contactless and mobile pay fly through fastest, especially around morning bank times before 09:00. If you care about seat comfort while reading, pick a smaller paperback rather than a chunky hardback for tight-legroom flights on older 737s. Tip: check the front promo table first – that’s where the current 2-for deals usually sit.
