Gate-side snack run near Main Terminal departures
By the time you clear security in MGA’s Main Terminal, La Colonia Express is usually the first recognizable Nicaraguan grocery brand you see. Think mini-supermarket more than duty free: drinks, chips, candy, basic toiletries, and a few local products packed into a compact storefront in the departures area.
Hours track most outbound flights, roughly from early-morning check-in waves until the last evening departures, so it’s open for the 6:00–7:00 a.m. crowd and the late-night northbound runs. If your hotel breakfast was weak or your connection is long, this is the spot for a quick top-up before boarding.
Prices run closer to downtown supermarket levels than typical airport markups: expect bottled water and sodas around local street prices, with snacks only slightly higher. You can pay in córdobas or US dollars, and many travelers report smaller purchases under USD $20 going through quickly at the register.
Stock skews toward grab-and-go: 500 ml bottled water, canned soft drinks, packaged cookies, chips, and a few local sweets you can throw into a backpack. It’s also one of the more practical places in the Main Terminal to grab last-minute basics like toothpaste or over-the-counter painkillers before a 3–5 hour regional flight.
Tip: if you want water for the plane, buy the largest bottle allowed by your airline here after security; prices for the same size on board often run at least 30–50% higher on US and regional carriers out of MGA.
