OMR 0.500 gets you from MCT to central Muscat
The Mwasalat Public Bus is the cheapest way out of Muscat International Airport T1, with a flat fare of OMR 0.500 paid on board in cash. It suits solo travellers or backpackers with a daypack heading toward Ruwi, Muttrah, or central Muscat who don’t mind a 30–60 minute ride with multiple stops along Sultan Qaboos Street.
Buses run roughly every 30 minutes during the day, so factor that into your arrival if your flight lands at 10:10 or any odd time. Services operate from the forecourt in front of T1 arrivals; you walk out past the taxi rank and look for the red-and-white Mwasalat-branded buses, usually lined up along the main curb with route numbers on the front.
Journey time ranges from about 30 minutes in lighter traffic to close to 60 minutes during the evening peak along the airport–Al Khuwair–Ruwi corridor. The bus makes several stops, so if you’re staying near the ministries area or Qurum, you can often get off within 500–800 meters of major hotels or guesthouses instead of backtracking by taxi from Ruwi.
Tickets cost OMR 0.500 per person per ride, paid directly to the driver or via the onboard machine, so keep small notes or coins ready right after the ATM in arrivals. There’s no need to prebook, and there’s no surcharge for luggage, but big checked bags and 23 kg suitcases are awkward on the narrow aisles and can block the middle door during busy times.
Service frequency of every 30 minutes means you might stand at the stop for 5 minutes or the full half hour depending what time you exit passport control. In the daytime heat that matters, so grab water from the arrivals-level shop; a 500 ml bottle usually runs around OMR 0.200 and makes that curb wait less rough.
Skips: late-night arrivals after around 23:00, early-morning flights, or tight plans with meetings within 45 minutes of landing. In those cases, pay the roughly OMR 8–10 for a metered airport taxi and cut out the stops. Tip: screenshot your hotel’s location on a map with the name in Arabic before you fly so you can match it to the bus stop list or decide where to bail for a short final taxi hop.
