Four passengers, four suitcases, straight out of T1 customs
The Airport Taxi Rank sits immediately outside the arrivals hall in T1 at Muscat International Airport, about a 1–2 minute walk from customs exit to the first car door. It’s a metered taxi setup with official white-and-orange cabs, so you pay by distance and time rather than haggling a flat fare in the driveway.
All taxis here run on government-approved meters, with a regulated starting fare and per-kilometre rate that’s displayed inside the car; rides into central Muscat (Ruwi, Muttrah, Qurum) typically land in the 6–12 OMR range depending on traffic and exact address. You pay the driver directly in cash, and some cars accept cards or mobile payment, but assume cash unless you actually see the terminal.
The rank works 24/7, which matches the late-night arrival banks at MCT where several long-haul flights hit after 23:00. During those peaks you may see a line of 10–20 taxis staged at the curb, and dispatchers in reflective vests help direct families, solo travelers, and larger groups to the right vehicle size.
Most standard sedans at the rank comfortably handle three adults with three 23 kg checked bags, but if you’re a group of four with four or more checked cases, ask the dispatcher for a larger car or MPV before you reach the front of the line. Bigger vehicles usually sit in a separate row at the same curb and cost a bit more on the meter due to higher base fares.
The rank sits on the same level as arrivals, so you avoid elevators and long ramps with trolleys full of bags; it’s roughly 150–200 meters from the customs doors to the far end of the taxi line. That short push makes this option easier with sleeping kids, strollers, and multiple suitcases than dragging everything to ride-shares or off-airport pickups.
Tip: Before you pull away from T1, quickly confirm with the driver that the meter is on and reset to the base fare; it takes 5 seconds and keeps the final bill aligned with the official rate for your ride out of Muscat International Airport.
