Car rental

Two minutes’ walk from T1 arrivals, the Car Rental Center sets you up for road trips beyond Muscat

The Car Rental Center sits directly opposite the main arrivals hall in Terminal 1 (T1), so you walk maybe 150–200 meters from baggage claim and you’re there. Counters for major international brands sit side by side with local firms, all under one roof. This setup works best if you’re planning multi-day drives to Nizwa, Sur, or Wadi Shab rather than just shuttling into Muttrah or Qurum.

Most rental desks stay open to match late-night long-haul arrivals, with many operating close to 24 hours and clearly signposted in English and Arabic inside T1. You’ll usually find compact hatchbacks, Toyota Corollas, and SUVs in the 4×4 category, which matter if you’re heading for wadis or rougher coastal roads. Fuel in Oman is cheap by global standards, so a full day of driving outside the city often costs less in petrol than a single 20–25 OMR round-trip taxi from the airport to central Muscat.

Pricing spans from basic economy cars around 12–18 OMR per day to larger SUVs that can run 25–40 OMR per day, depending on season and insurance. Most agencies at the Car Rental Center take major credit cards like Visa and Mastercard and hold deposits that can sit in the 100–200 OMR range. Check your confirmation email for mileage rules; some local outfits still quote limited daily kilometers, while the big global brands usually offer unlimited mileage for trips across the Batinah coast or into the interior.

The pickup area is directly outside the Car Rental Center, with signed bays for each company and cars parked within a 1–3 minute walk from the counters. You’ll exit the airport on Route 1 within about 5–10 minutes of getting your keys, and from there it’s roughly 35–40 km to Barka, about 160 km to Nizwa, and around 200 km to Sur. Most contracts at MCT specify that standard sedans stay on paved roads; for unpaved tracks into some wadis, staff often recommend a 4×4 from their SUV fleet.

One practical tip: reserve at least 48 hours ahead if you’re landing Thursday or Friday, since weekend demand for 4×4 vehicles jumps with locals heading to the mountains and coastal spots, and walk-up renters sometimes face limited choice or last-minute price bumps.
