Duty Free

Gate area in T1 feels tiny, and Duty Free matches

In Terminal 1 at El Alto, the airside zone is basically two Duty Free shops, one snack bar, and a small kiosk, so set expectations low. This Duty Free sits post-security near the international gates and focuses on the basics: liquor, cigarettes, a few chocolates, and last‑minute gifts. Shelves look sparse compared with larger South American airports like Lima or São Paulo, and product turnover feels slow.

Prices run middling rather than true “airport bargain” level, with spirits and cigarettes closer to downtown La Paz shop prices than to big-hub duty free deals. You’ll see standard brands rather than rare bottles, and the chocolate section leans on global names plus a few Bolivian options. If you want specific whisky labels or premium cosmetics, buy in the city before heading up to the airport’s 4,061 m altitude.

Opening hours loosely track international departures, so expect it open for overnight and early‑morning flights but not as a 24/7 guarantee. Stock for perfume, skincare, and electronics is very limited; think a single glass case or two, not aisles. Most people here grab a boxed chocolate, a bottle of singani, or a carton of cigarettes in under five minutes and then move to the small waiting room.

Tip: If you care about choice, do your shopping in La Paz city and treat Terminal 1’s Duty Free as a backup for one or two forgotten items, not a main stop.
