Kona Surf Co

Gate area shop near KOA’s Main Terminal departures

Kona Surf Co sits past security in the Main Terminal, near the outdoor gate areas where everyone queues for the 717s and 737s to Honolulu and the mainland. It’s a small footprint, more merch wall than deep store, but it covers last-minute Hawaii basics plus logo gear in one quick stop before boarding.

The focus is apparel: think T-shirts, hats, rash guards, and boardshorts in the $20–$60 range, all with Kona, Big Island, or surf-themed prints. You’ll also see simple cotton hoodies that make sense if you’re heading to a colder destination after leaving KOA’s open-air gates. Sizing and stock lean tourist, not hardcore surf shop, but it’s fine for grab-and-go gifts.

Non-clothing racks carry flip-flops, beach towels, and sun gear, including higher-SPF sunscreen and reef-safe options that cost a few dollars more than in town. There are also small souvenirs under $15—stickers, keychains, and logo mugs—that work when you forgot to shop in Kailua-Kona proper. No snacks or drinks here; that’s all at the general stores and kiosks closer to check-in.

Hours generally track flight banks, opening for the early morning departures before 7:00 a.m. and staying open into the later westbound flights that leave around 9:00 p.m., but smaller gaps do happen midday. If you care about specific sizes or designs, stop here right after security instead of waiting until your group is boarding.
