Gate-side Big Island treats at KOA’s Main Terminal
Near the Main Terminal gates at Ellison Onizuka Kona International (KOA), Big Island Candies is the quick stop for local snacks you can still carry on. This is post-security, so you can swing through after TSA while you watch your boarding time. Expect mostly grab-and-go cookies and chocolates rather than a full gift shop setup.
The signature item here is their shortbread cookies, usually sold in small boxed sets that fit easily in a personal item. Prices are airport-marked but not outrageous for Kona: think in the $10–$25 range depending on box size and flavor mixes. Staff move people through fast when a bank of inter-island flights is loading, so you’re rarely stuck more than a few minutes in line.
Flavors skew local: macadamia nut shortbread, chocolate-dipped varieties, and Kona coffee–themed sweets are common on the shelves. Most items are sealed and labeled for travel, which helps if you’re connecting later through HNL or the mainland. If you’re sensitive to nuts, read the ingredient lists carefully; a lot of products here use macadamia or share production lines.
Hours generally track KOA’s flight banks and can start as early as 7:00 a.m. on heavier days, tapering as late departures clear out. Inventory runs thinner on evening flights, especially Sundays and holidays. If you want a specific flavor box, don’t wait until the last outbound of the day.
Tip: grab one small box for gifts and one loose snack pack for the flight, so you’re not cracking open the present box at 35,000 feet.
