Few big hubs still have a real post office; JNB does.
The Post Office at O. R. Tambo International Airport sits in the main terminal complex alongside bank branches, forex counters and the VAT refund desk, and still handles basic mail. Staff process letters and light parcels, so you can send paperwork or small souvenirs home instead of risking them in checked bags. Prices track standard South African postal rates, so posting a simple document usually runs well under R100, with options for registered mail if you need a tracking slip.
This is a landside service in the terminal buildings at JNB, so build in 20–30 extra minutes before security on departure days. It’s especially handy if you’ve collected paperwork from a consulate in Johannesburg, or if you bought fragile gifts in the city and don’t trust the overhead bins on a packed A330 or 777. Expect classic counter service: forms, stamps, packaging, and a basic range of envelopes available for purchase if you turned up empty-handed.
Hours generally follow airport daytime patterns, roughly from around 08:00 until late afternoon; don’t count on it for a 23:00 departure or a 05:30 first wave bank of flights. With no major complaints reported, the main risk is timing: if you’re tight on a regional hop out of Terminal A or B, do check your gate first on the screens before walking back toward the banking and VAT area. One tip: pre-address envelopes in your hotel room so you’re in and out of the counter in under 10 minutes.
