Africa Souvenir Shop

A

Near the A gates, Africa Souvenir Shop is the place in Terminal A when you realise you forgot gifts. It sits airside after security, so you can pop in on the way to international departures without risking passport control queues. Signage just says “Africa Souvenir Shop,” so look for the bold animal prints and carved masks near other duty-free units.

Prices sit in the mid-range for an airport: expect small keyrings and magnets around R50–R80, carved animals from roughly R150 up, and larger pieces stretching into several hundred rand. It’s all pay-at-the-counter with standard card terminals, and they accept the usual Visa/Mastercard issued outside South Africa. Stock skews heavily to wood carvings, printed textiles, and fridge magnets labelled Johannesburg or South Africa.

Product quality is mixed but fine for last-minute souvenirs rather than serious collectors. You’ll see mass-produced items right next to slightly better hand-painted pieces, often with “Made in South Africa” stickers. Nothing here feels duty-free premium like the big liquor and cosmetics stores in Terminal A, so treat it more like a tourist market stall transplanted into JNB.

Time-wise, give yourself 10–15 minutes to browse; displays are dense and it’s easy to lose track near boarding. If you want anything bulky, check your airline’s cabin baggage rules for A-gate international flights, as some carriers out of JNB are strict on a single carry-on plus small personal item. Quick tip: grab smaller, flat items like tea towels or soft toys if your hand luggage is already close to the size limit.
