Gate-side souvenirs in Terminal A

Two minutes from most international gates in Terminal A, Out of Africa is the main stop at JNB for last-minute South African gifts. It sits airside in the departures retail strip, so you hit it after security and passport control, not before. Figure on 5–10 minutes to walk in, scan shelves, and still make boarding for a nearby A-gate.

Stock skews to Africa-themed items: carved wooden animals, beadwork, printed T‑shirts, and coffee-table books that actually say “Johannesburg” or “South Africa” on the cover. Prices range from about R80 for small keyrings up to several hundred rand for larger masks and bowls. It’s all fixed-price, so don’t plan on bargaining like you might in town.

You’ll also see rooibos teas, biltong gift packs, chutneys, and spice mixes, which run roughly R60–R200 depending on brand. Check your onward destination’s customs rules if you’re heading to Australia, New Zealand, or the US; sealed and labeled food is usually the safest bet. Skip very bulky wooden pieces if you’re tight on cabin baggage, since some of the larger statues easily hit carry-on size.

Quality is mixed: some items are mass-produced for tourists, others are locally made and labeled as such. If you care, look for tags naming specific regions in South Africa or materials like jacaranda or kiaat. Card payments are accepted and tap works; you don’t need leftover rand here. Last tip: take photos of price tags before you decide, then do a quick mental rand-to-home-currency check so you don’t overspend in the pre-boarding rush.
