Gate A-side book stop before security chaos hits

Exclusive Books in Terminal A sits airside on the international departures level, so you can duck in after security but before you commit to your gate. It’s one of the few spots in JNB where you’ll reliably find English paperbacks alongside local South African authors in the same run of shelves.

Expect airport pricing: new-release paperbacks often sit in the R260–R320 range, with hardcovers pushing well past R400. There’s usually a small table of promos closer to R150–R220 if you just want something to kill an 8–10 hour long-haul. Magazines and puzzle books sit near the entrance for grab-and-go under R120.

Stock leans heavily to fiction and crime, plus non-fiction on South African history and politics, which you rarely see in the smaller kiosks near gates A7–A15. Kids’ titles and activity books line a full bay, good if you’re trying to keep a screen break going on a 9-hour flight to Europe or Asia.

Most branches like this at JNB open early, typically around 06:00, and stay open until the late bank of departures around 22:00–23:00. That makes it a safer bet than the smaller newsstands that sometimes close around 21:00 when the concourse feels quiet.

Cards are accepted for tiny purchases, and you’ll see prices listed in rand only, so have a rough ZAR conversion in mind if you’re paying with a foreign card. One last pass: walk the front tables first; that’s where the newer South African titles land before they vanish from the main shelves.
