One of the only global chains at GCM’s T1

Subway at Owen Roberts International Airport (GCM) in Terminal 1 is basically the only familiar US fast-food logo you’ll see before departure, and it carries a rough 2.5-star reputation online. It’s standard Subway: build-your-own sandwiches on display, cold cuts in the case, and a few cookie trays by the register. If you land hungry from a Cayman Airways hop and want something you recognize, this is the option you’ll spot first in the small terminal.

Expect typical menu boards with 6-inch and 12-inch subs, salads, and fountain drinks, priced higher than off-airport Cayman locations by a few Cayman dollars per combo. You’ll see the usual suspects: Italian B.M.T., Tuna, Veggie Delite, Meatball Marinara, plus bottled water and soft drinks in the cooler. Portions match mainland standards, but several locals in a 2020 Facebook thread about GCM food say they just “eat before” going to the airport because prices and quality across the terminal feel weak.

The shop sits airside in the departures area of T1, past security and within a short walk of the Cayman Airways and American Airlines gates, so you can grab a sub after clearing formalities. Lines move in 5–10 minute bursts around afternoon US departures to Miami and Charlotte, then drop off quickly. If you’re tight on time before a 45-minute island hop, a pre-made cold cut combo or turkey sub is usually faster than asking for lots of custom toppings.

Watch out for lukewarm expectations: that same GCM Facebook debate lumps Subway in with “awful” airport food in general, without calling it out by name, which says a lot about overall sentiment. Bread can taste a bit stale late in the day, and lettuce sometimes looks tired after 5 p.m., so aim for earlier flights if you care about freshness. Cookies near the till are often the safest bet when you just want a quick snack under CI$4.

Tip: if you have time, eat properly in George Town, then treat Subway at GCM as a backup option for a simple sandwich or drink while you wait at the T1 gates.
