Local Crafts Corner

T1

Last call for Madeiran gifts in T1

Just past security in Terminal T1, Local Crafts Corner scoops up anyone who ran out of time for the Mercado dos Lavradores in Funchal. Shelves lean hard into “Made in Madeira” souvenirs: embroidered linen, cork accessories, simple wicker pieces, and small bottles of local liqueurs or poncha-style mixes. You’re paying airport markup here; expect prices to run 20–40% higher than you saw in town, if you made it into Funchal at all.

The stand sits airside in T1 near the main departure gates, so you can duck in even with a 30–40 minute boarding window. Stock skews giftable and packable: wrapped honey cakes, mini bolo de mel portions, vacuum-packed cookies, and small jars of local jam under 100 ml for carry-on rules. It’s more kiosk than full shop, so you’re in and out in under 10 minutes unless you overthink the embroidery patterns.

Regulars who fly in and out of FNC a few times a year say they do their main craft and food shopping in Funchal and treat Local Crafts Corner as backup only. Typical move: buy one or two extra €5–€15 items here to top up gift counts for family or coworkers after realizing you miscounted. Big-ticket woven baskets or large bottles of rum punch are better value in town.

Watch out for the food vs. non-food price gap: the mark-up on simple trinkets can be steep compared with a stall in Funchal, while the difference on wrapped sweets or bolo de mel is smaller, often just a couple of euros per box. If your time is tight before an early-morning departure, snap photos of the price tags first, then decide quickly so you’re not that passenger sprinting to a 07:30 boarding call.

Tip: set a rough limit before you walk up (for example, three gifts or €30) so you don’t walk out having accidentally doubled your souvenir budget in five minutes.
