Train

18 minutes from BRU to Brussels Central on the Airport Express

The SNCB Brussels Airport Express runs up to 6 times per hour at peak between Brussels Airport-Zaventem and Brussels Central, Brussels Nord, and Brussels Midi. Trains depart from the underground station directly under terminal T, signed "Railway Station" and "Level -1"; follow the escalators down after baggage claim and customs.

Tickets into Brussels city usually price around €10–€15 one-way, including the required Diabolo surcharge for trips from the airport. You buy tickets from the blue SNCB machines on level -1, the ticket counters when open, or in the SNCB app; machines accept cards, most contactless, and coins. Keep the ticket handy as inspectors do regular checks on this route.

First and second class run in the same train, with second class covering most of the coaches and first class limited to a few clearly marked cars. The ride from Brussels Airport-Zaventem to Brussels Central is about 18 minutes, to Brussels Nord around 12 minutes, and to Brussels Midi around 20 minutes. Trains generally start before 05:00 and run past 23:00, but late-night frequencies drop to about 2 trains per hour.

The Airport Express is branded but uses standard SNCB rolling stock, so expect 2+2 seating in second class and slightly wider 2+1 seats in first. Luggage just goes on overhead racks or in open floor space near doors; there is no separate checked baggage facility. Platforms at the airport are usually tracks 1–3, shown on the yellow boards and the blue electronic screens on level -1.

If you need to connect beyond Brussels, the same ticket can be bought with an add-on to other Belgian stations like Antwerp-Centraal or Gent-Sint-Pieters. IC and local trains share the same platforms, so check the 4-letter train number and departure time before boarding. Travel time from BRU to Antwerp-Centraal runs around 30–35 minutes on direct IC trains.

One practical tip: buy your ticket in the SNCB app while still on airport Wi‑Fi and screenshot the QR code, so you can walk straight down to level -1 and step onto the next Airport Express without queuing at the machines during the 07:30–09:00 and 16:30–18:30 rush windows.
