First departure into Brussels Midi usually leaves around 05:30
Brussels Airport-Zaventem Railway Station sits directly under Terminal T, three levels below departures, and connects the airport to Brussels, Leuven, Antwerp and beyond. Trains are run by SNCB/NMBS, and the station is fully inside the airport complex, so you roll your bag straight from arrivals down to the platforms in under 10 minutes.
Standard IC trains reach Brussels Central in about 20 minutes and Brussels Midi in roughly 25 minutes, usually with 4–6 departures per hour in daytime. Trains to Leuven take about 15 minutes, while Antwerp-Central runs are around 30–40 minutes depending on the route. The key extra is the “Diabolo” airport supplement, roughly €6–7 per journey, automatically included in most tickets to or from “Brussels Airport-Zaventem.”
Ticket machines line level -1, right before the escalators down to platforms 1–3, and accept cards and coins; counters usually open from around 06:00 to 22:00. A one-way to Brussels Central typically prices near €10 including the Diabolo fee, while Leuven is a bit cheaper and Antwerp slightly higher. Off-peak “weekend” tickets often shave a few euros off, but the Diabolo charge still applies in both directions.
First trains toward Brussels and Leuven usually roll around 05:30, and the last useful departures into the city land near 00:00–00:30 depending on the day. Frequency drops to 2 trains per hour late evening, so don’t assume the 10-minute headways you get around 08:00–18:00. Electronic boards in the arrivals hall and on level -1 show real-time platform numbers and delays in minutes.
The station has three platforms, usually numbered 1–3, with elevators and escalators at each end, and step-free access from arrivals level 2 via lifts. Luggage trolleys are allowed down to level -1 but not onto the platforms, so plan on actually rolling or carrying your bags for the last 50–100 meters. Security-wise, you’re still inside the airport perimeter, with regular Belgian Rail ticket checks on board rather than at fixed barriers.
For connections beyond Brussels, IC trains from the airport to Brussels Midi usually arrive on platforms 10–12 and give 10–20 minutes before Thalys/Eurostar departures if you time it right. The Diabolo fee only applies to the airport leg; once you leave Zaventem, standard SNCB fares and passes kick in. If you want fewer surprises, buy a through-ticket from “Brussels Airport-Zaventem” to your final Belgian station so the system builds the Diabolo into one price.
Practical tip: aim to buy your ticket while still waiting for bags, then allow 15 minutes from clearing customs in Terminal T to standing on the platform, so you don’t sprint for the next IC into Brussels.
