MIVB/STIB Airport Line 12

Bus

€7.00 gets you from BRU to the EU quarter on Bus 12

MIVB/STIB Airport Line 12 runs from Brussels Airport (T) to Bruxelles-Luxembourg station in the EU quarter, then on towards the city. It’s a bit slower than the IC train to Bruxelles-Central but cheaper if you use a €7 “Go2City” airport ticket on a contactless card. This is a solid pick if you have only hand luggage and plan to stay around Schuman, Luxembourg, or Place du Luxembourg.

On weekdays until about 20:00, Line 12 runs as an “Airport Line” express service between BRU and the city with fewer stops; after roughly 20:00 and all day on weekends it switches to Line 12/21 style service with more intermediate stops and slightly longer trip times. Typical daytime frequency is around every 10–20 minutes, so you rarely wait long if you just missed one.

The stop at Brussels Airport sits on level 0, outside the arrivals hall of Terminal T, signed as “Bus” with blue MIVB/STIB branding. Look for “Airport Line 12” on the front display heading to “Brussels City” or “Luxembourg.” The first bus usually leaves the airport around 05:30, with last departures close to 00:00, but check the MIVB/STIB website or app for exact times on your travel date.

A single “Go2City” ticket bought by contactless payment on board costs €7.00 and covers travel from the airport to any stop inside Brussels city limits on MIVB/STIB buses, trams, and metro for 60 minutes. Regular JUMP or MOBIB fares do not include the airport supplement, so tapping a normal ticket can lead to a fine over €100. You tap in once when boarding the bus through the front door.

The bus route passes key stops like NATO (near the E40), Da Vinci, Bordet Station, Diamant, Schuman (EU institutions), and ends at Bruxelles-Luxembourg, under 600 m from the European Parliament. In light traffic, BRU to Schuman or Luxembourg takes around 30–35 minutes; during rush hour on the E40 and around Schuman Tunnel it can stretch closer to 45–50 minutes.

Line 12 vehicles are standard city buses with two or three doors, a low-floor layout, and space for luggage racks near the front. Seats fill quickly in the morning between 07:30 and 09:00 and again around 16:30–18:30, so expect to stand with your cabin bag. Officially, you board at the front door and show or tap your card next to the driver.

Compared with the SNCB/NMBS train from the airport (around €10.30 to Bruxelles-Central in 17–20 minutes), Bus 12 is slower but cheaper and drops you closer to EU offices around Schuman and Luxembourg. The main trade-off is road traffic and comfort: trains run every 10–20 minutes and never get stuck on the E40; buses can bunch and arrive in pairs if there’s congestion.

Watch out for the service switch in the evening: after about 20:00 and on weekends, Airport Line 12 effectively becomes Line 21 with more stops between BRU and Schuman and slightly longer runtimes. If you land late and want the city faster, the train to Bruxelles-Central or Bruxelles-Schuman might save you 10–15 minutes door-to-door.

One practical tip: if you’re light on bags and heading to the EU quarter on a weekday, skip the ticket machines and just tap a contactless bank card or phone at the validator when boarding Bus 12—€7 is charged automatically and you’re set for bus, tram, or metro within Brussels for the next 60 minutes.
