Route 471 links BRU to Leuven’s outskirts, not Grand Place
De Lijn Bus 471 runs from Brussels Airport (T terminal area) toward the Leuven region, mainly helping commuters who already hold De Lijn season tickets or 10-journey passes. It’s a standard yellow De Lijn regional bus, not an airport-branded coach, so think local stops rather than express into Brussels-Central or Brussels-Midi. If your hotel or address sits along the 471 corridor east of the airport, this can beat backtracking via Brussels-Nord by 20–30 minutes.
The stop sits outside the arrivals level at BRU, signed as the De Lijn bus station, alongside other routes like 272 and 471’s cousin lines. You’ll pass through the public area, so no boarding pass or security check; just walk out from baggage claim in T and follow the “Bus / De Lijn” signs. Count on 5–7 minutes from belt to platform if you walk straight, and more if you still need to buy a ticket from the De Lijn machine near the stop.
Bus 471 uses standard De Lijn fares: a single ticket runs a few euros, and you can also tap a contactless bank card or use an m-ticket in the De Lijn app. If you already carry an Omnipas or 10-rit card that covers the Brussels Airport supplement, you’re set. Otherwise, check on the De Lijn machine screen for any airport surcharge before you board, because drivers on 471 normally don’t sell paper tickets anymore.
Timetables vary by weekday and time of day, but you typically see 471 every 30–60 minutes in the daytime, with fewer departures late evening after 21:00. The LED screens at the De Lijn platforms show “471” plus the destination and minutes until departure. If your flight lands after 23:00, don’t assume 471 still runs; at that hour, a standard taxi from the airport rank outside T or an SNCB train from level -1 might be the safer call.
Because 471 is built around commuters, you’ll hit peak loads between roughly 07:00–09:00 and 16:00–18:00 on weekdays, especially between the airport and Leuven-side stops. The buses are low-floor with space for hand luggage and a couple of suitcases, but this isn’t a luggage-heavy airport coach like some dedicated routes at BRU. If you’re rolling a 23 kg checked bag plus a carry-on, aim for the middle doors and avoid blocking the front aisle during those rush-hour runs.
Use 471 only if your map shows a direct stop near your stay in the Leuven region; otherwise, walk down to level -1 and take the SNCB train from Brussels Airport-Zaventem into Brussels-Central or Leuven instead.
